September – Responsible Dog Ownership
Here at Sunland Acres the Board & Train program is how we participate in helping our community become responsible dog owners. Our Board & Train equips you with the tools to continue your dog’s education at home by creating a confident, well-mannered dog and a more responsible you!
Sunland Acre’s Board & Train
Have you always wished of having the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood? Does your dog struggle with behaviors like pulling on the leash, rushing through door ways or not coming when called? Do you want to feel confident in bringing your furry friend on adventures with you? Then our Board and Train program may be the right option for you!
What your dog will learn:
- Sit
- Down
- Stay
- Place
- Come
- Heel (loose leash walking)
- Auto sits when stopping
- Threshold manners
- Impulse control
- Overall manners
Dogs will also gain overall confidence and socialization skills at various locations such as parks and pet stores. We have a 5 day to a two-week program and can be added on to current reservations, or booked in advance!
National Responsible Dog Ownership
National Responsible Dog Ownership month is celebrated this September to raise awareness of all the responsibilities dog owners have with their pets. The American Kennel Club (AKC) designates this month to encourage dog owners to provide dogs with the best life possible and meet their needs.
Here are some ways to be a more responsible dog owner:
- Socialize your dog: Expose your dog to different people and settings. Pet stores, scheduling playdates and walks are great ways to do so. Doggie daycare here at Sunland is another great option to introduce your dogs to new people and surroundings!
- Canine Enrichment: The benefits of adding enrichment are endless – from stimulating the mind, reducing stress, and assuring that innate behavioral needs are met. Sunland Acres proudly offers enrichment activities for your dog whether its during boarding, daycare, or before a groom. Check out some of our enrichments here!
- Take your dog to class: Training and Obedience classes can be a great experience for both you and your dog. Contact us about our Board & Train program!
- Exercise: While some dogs live for their daily walks, others may prefer a faster pace, in which case a run or strenuous hike with elevation changes might be more appropriate. For other dogs, play is key. A rigorous game of fetch or tug-o-war might prove the best exercise for a playful dog who craves attention and stimulation, along with physical activity.
- Review your dog’s care routine: September is a good time to evaluate your dog’s care routine and see if there are any areas that need improvement. You can also consider these resolutions for responsible pet ownership:
- Regular veterinary check-ups
- Balanced nutrition
- Adequate exercise
- Mental stimulation
- Grooming routine
- Dental care
- Microchipping and identification
- Regular parasite prevention
