Pawsitively Summer: Keeping Your Pets Safe & Happy in the June Heat ☀️🐾

June is here, and with it comes sunshine, BBQs, and long days spent enjoying the great outdoors with our furry companions. As we dive into summer fun, let’s make sure we’re also keeping our pets safe, cool, and comfy!

Here are some warm-weather tips to help your pets stay healthy and happy all summer long:

Beat the Heat: Preventing Heatstroke & Overheating

  • Never leave pets in cars — ever. Even with windows cracked, the inside of a car can turn into an oven in minutes. It’s just not worth the risk.
  • Keep them cool with shade and fresh water. Always make sure your pet has a shady spot to chill and a bowl full of clean, cool water. Adding a few ice cubes can be a refreshing bonus!
  • Exercise wisely. Early mornings and evenings are the best times for walks. Midday sun is harsh, so avoid strenuous play during peak heat hours.
  • Know the signs of heatstroke. Watch for heavy panting, drooling, glazed eyes, or wobbly legs. If you see any of these, act fast and get help—heatstroke is serious.

Hydration & Pesky Parasites

  • Hydration is everything. Keep water bowls full and fresh. And if your pet’s anything like mine, they’ll love the sound of ice clinking in their bowl on a hot day!
  • Stay ahead of fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Parasites love summer too—but we don’t love them! Use vet-recommended preventatives and give your pet a quick check after outdoor adventures.

Summer Safety

  • Toxic treats alert: Chocolate, grapes, onions, and more can be harmful. Keep your BBQ buffet out of paw’s reach.
  • Grill safety: Curious noses and hot grills don’t mix. Keep pets away from cooking areas and tools.
  • Sun protection: Light-colored or short-haired pets can get sunburned. Ask your vet about pet-safe sunscreen.
  • Swimming safely: Always supervise water-loving pets, and use a life vest if needed.
  • Paw protection: Hot pavement can burn paw pads—test it with your hand or opt for grassy paths.
  • Travel prep: Road-tripping? Don’t forget food, water, ID tags, and your pet’s favorite toy to make them feel at home on the go.
