Responsible Pet Ownership Starts with Training

We believe that being a responsible pet owner is about more than just love—it’s about commitment, care, and consistency. With National Responsible Dog Ownership Day coming up on September 17th, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the roles we play in our dogs’ lives and how we can be the best pet parents possible.
This special day, promoted by the American Kennel Club (AKC), is dedicated to educating the public about what it really means to care for a dog. Events across the country feature training demos, health clinics, microchipping, and other helpful resources. While the joy of owning a dog is unmatched, it also comes with a fair share of responsibilities, including proper training.
Training = Responsible Ownership

Dog training is a key part of responsible pet ownership. It helps ensure your dog is safe, well-behaved, and able to enjoy greater freedom in everyday life. From loose-leash walking and basic commands like “sit” or “stay,” to polite socialization with people and other dogs, training strengthens your bond and builds mutual trust.
At Sunland Acres, we specialize in positive reinforcement methods, grounded in science-backed techniques. Our goal is to help you find the training program and approach that best fits your dog’s personality and your lifestyle.

Training and Walking Go Paw in Paw!

Every year on September 8, we celebrate National Dog Walker Appreciation Day and here at Sunland Acres, we’re daily dog walkers who know just how important—and fun—it is to get out and walk with our furry friends. Walking your dog isn’t just great exercise; it’s a chance to bond, explore, and keep them mentally and physically healthy. We love what we do and want to spread awareness about how safe, simple, and rewarding regular dog walks can be for both pets and their people. Whether it’s sunny skies or rainy days, a good walk can make all the difference!
Tips for Better Walks:
- Train your dog to walk calmly on a leash
- Teach basic commands like heel and sit
- Bring water and treats
- Stay alert and clean up after your dog
To make those walks even better, we focus on loose leash walking during our Monday night group training classes. Practicing this skill helps reduce pulling, creates a calmer walking experience, and makes outings more enjoyable for both the dog and the owner. A well-behaved walker is a happier companion—and a more pleasant walking partner for everyone involved!
National Service Dog Month – Four legged Heroes
September is National Service Dog Month, a time to recognize the life-changing work of service dogs and the deep bond they share with their handlers. These incredible dogs help individuals with disabilities by performing essential tasks—like guiding the visually impaired, alerting to medical issues, or supporting those with PTSD.
Service dogs undergo years of specialized training to prepare for their roles, and their impact goes far beyond physical assistance—they offer independence, safety, and emotional support.
At Sunland Acres, we know that all great dogs start with strong training. While not every pup becomes a service dog, consistent, positive training helps every dog become a reliable, well-mannered companion.
This month, take a moment to celebrate these hardworking heroes and the trainers behind them. Their dedication truly changes lives.
